With McGoff & Byrne’s redevelopment work well underway at Butlins in Minehead, the principal contractor hosted an exclusive construction masterclass for students at West Somerset College.
A group of Year 11 students, together with their construction teacher, Terry Hall, attended the masterclass on site, which was led by McGoff & Byrne’s contracts manager, Harry Galloway.
The 15 year olds, all construction students at West Somerset College, enjoyed a tour of the site, meet and greet with various tradesmen as well as a preview of the stunning show chalet.
McGoff & Byrne is responsible for the entire build and fit out of the redevelopment scheme at Butlins, which comprises a mix of 117 lakeside, lake view and park view chalets arranged in one and two storey cluster blocks in landscaped parkland around two newly created lakes.
Such an impressive project is perfect as a masterclass for the students as there is so much to consider on site, including timber frame, lake construction, structural steel, M&E installation green energy.
Galloway says: “It was a pleasure to host the construction students from West Somerset College. A mixture of all trades, the pupils found the tour and meet and greet with the tradesmen most useful.
“This project is complex in that we are creating man-made lakes. It is also challenging as we are building and fitting out newly designed chalets, which together will meet the ambitious brief of totally transforming the resort. As such, this scheme worked really well for the students as there is so much going on, each pupil could concentrate on their own particular discipline.”
Hall adds: “The master class hosted by McGoff & Byrne at Butlins was excellent; it suited the construction students who all took away lots of information and nuggets of knowledge from site.
“Site tours and seeing the various trades at work offers an interactive element to the construction course, which is most beneficial to the students as it gives them a greater understanding of the theory they are taught at college. We are delighted McGoff & Byrne and Butlin’s were able to incorporate the masterclass into their busy schedule and appreciate all the effort and time they offered the students.”
Work on the first phase of the redevelopment at Butlins is due to finish February 2015.
