McGoff Chairman to retire after 32 years

It is with personal sadness but warm wishes that the Board announce the retirement of our Chairman James McGoff, effective September 2021. James’s leaving marks the end of an era for the McGoff Group.

In 1973 Jim and Ethna McGoff launched the trusted, regional contractor known as McGoff & Byrne. James was the first of the McGoff Brothers to enter the family business in 1989 and his 32 years in the family business have seen many significant accomplishments.

48 years on, McGoff Construction sits at the heart of a £130m domain of like-minded businesses collaboratively forming the McGoff Group. A seamless ability to acquire, design, build, operate and maintain across targeted healthcare, residential and commercial sectors has provided the platform for the Group to cement itself as the favoured choice for Clients, funders, JV partners & supply chain partners alike.

The Group is driven by family values, innovation, construction excellence and operational expertise. In an ever-changing, challenging environment the McGoff name signifies quality, agility and above all an unbreakable force that is well equipped to sustain the business for future generations to come.

James has played a critical role on the Board of Directors in the development and success of the business, forging 32 years of unbreakable relationships with colleagues, staff and clients alike. A much loved character, we will miss him and his charming and comical personality, we wish him the best of luck in his retirement and thank him for the 32 years of dedicated service to the family business. The board is truly excited for him as he enters into a new chapter in life.

A message from James McGoff

“I joined McGoff and Byrne Ltd in 1989, it was run directly by Mum and Dad being the only shareholders, the business was successful and profitable and was well respected, we worked in a geographical area known as Granada land, as per the coverage of the local TV station for many of the leading brewers and leisure brands at the time. The business at that time carried out mainly fast track pub and restaurant fit outs and renovations, together with a more stable and less frantically paced Local Authority work, school extensions and enveloping schemes.

We directly employed all the trades including ground workers, bricklayers, plasterers and plumbers, the business moved fast, staff were changed from site to site weekly and sometimes even daily, every one of the 60 odd site staff reported to the then head office at Dane Road 6 days a week having been collected in company buses and vans to be assigned a task and site for that day!

The scenes each morning of vans arriving, doors being flung open and men swapping vehicles with their bags and barrows of tools to orders barked from Dads right hand man Bill Daly always reminded me of being on the set the hit TV show Mike Reid’s Runaround!

The last 18 months have changed the world for all of us all, McGoff Construction and our repeat leisure clients, however it has led to an unprecedented demand for quality healthcare facilities to be swiftly and reliably delivered and has served to accelerate and reinforce the vision of the current Managing Directors in that the future for the business is in self delivery, with less reliance on competitive tendering for work in a shrinking marketplace.

I have been humbled by the commitment and hard work of my Brothers, the Board of Directors and our people in their passion for creating a truly purpose-driven company. I am very grateful to them, as I am to the companies many other stakeholders, with whom we have worked to build our long-term, sustainable business. I leave the business with unwavering pride, a lifetime of lessons and the most amazing memories.

The business is in great shape, with the best team and a healthy order book, it’s with sadness I write to you now but the direction of the business is right and the time is right for me, I will miss working with you all on a day to day basis and I thank you for your excellent work, loyalty and friendship over the years.”

McGoff Construction secures more than £100 million worth of contracts for 2021.

McGoff Construction, has secured more than £100 million worth of work for 2021.

The contracts are primarily for the McGoff Group’s asset backed operating businesses in the care and education sectors; New Care and Back to the Garden Childcare, as well as supporting revered clients with their nationwide roll our programmes in the health care and food retail arenas.

The Altrincham-based company has, throughout the pandemic, continuously evolved its holistic approach to design and construction, investing heavily in pre and post construction services, thereby expediting the commencement of fully designed projects, constructing within the optimum timeframe and supporting client’s mobilisation at build completion.

A consistent approach throughout the development journey effectively removes the inefficiencies and disconnect usually associated with procuring construction services. A partnering ethos has enabled early client engagement during the feasibility and design phase, ultimately de-risking the process for all stakeholders involved.

This ethos has led to improved visibility in respect of the work ahead, allowing the teams to think carefully about the uniformity of design to drive efficiencies at every phase of a project.

Furthermore, McGoff Construction has embraced modern methods of construction through the establishment of specialist subcontract businesses in lightweight metal superstructures, passive fire protection and mechanical and electrical services. Proffering specialist subcontract support to consultant teams enables designs to be fully developed via innovative software, well in advance of construction commencing, and provides cost certainty from the outset, whilst ensuring the building is fit for purpose and statutory complaint at completion.

The strategy has paid off with the company in an incredibly strong position, having fostered excellent relationships with Blue Chip clients, including New Care, Barchester and Care UK in the care sector, as well as Sainsbury’s and CO-OP in the retail sector.

Dave McGoff, Director at McGoff Construction, comments: “The Covid-19 pandemic has certainly brought challenges to the construction industry and driven change. From the outset we made communication our priority, with clients, the supply chain, subcontractors and consultants, as well as with every member of staff, navigating a way through the uncertainty and successfully establishing a clear direction for the business.

“One of the main objectives in the last couple of years, and indeed during the pandemic, has been to become as self-sufficient as possible, which is now very much a reality. We are constantly self-generating work through the Group’s asset backed operational businesses, having built 11 care homes for New Care, one day nursery for Back to the Garden Childcare and various residential schemes for Villafont, notably Downtown, the £53 million apartment scheme in Manchester.

“We have taken time to review and enhance certain parts of the business, expanding our self-delivery strategics in the last 18 months with the introduction of Panacea Building Systems, the establishment of Downtown Asset Management (DAM) and the launch of a Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) offering within the existing McGoff Group Facilities Services.

“These new divisions will help us gain further control and drive efficiencies in the delivery of our developments. With an uncertain economic period expected, our evolution will safeguard the sustainability of work in the coming months and years.”

With 48 years’ experience, McGoff Construction is a privately owned, multi award winning construction and integrated support services business. Building for generations and working with select clients nationally, the company offers a holistic range of services; acquire, design, build, operate and maintain.

McGoff Construction completes £85m Salford Development

The McGoff Group has completed Downtown, its £85m 374 Manhattan-inspired apartment development on the banks of the River Irwell in Salford, 14 months ahead of schedule. Located on Woden Street, the development was designed by Leach Rhodes Walker Architects and built by McGoff Construction, part of the McGoff Group. Partners during the build programme included Heyrods and HE SIMM.

Right from the start, Downtown has been a huge success for the McGoff Group, with all properties sold off-plan. The range of one, two and three bedroom apartments, combined with its convenient location on the Salford and Manchester border, resulted in high demand for the properties from overseas investors, with the sales secured in Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai through Alliance Property.  UK investors as well as owner-occupiers keen to reside at the city centre’s most desirable residential address also snapped up the apartments.

Phase I of Downtown (164 apartments) completed in April 2019.  Completions for Phase II are now underway for the remaining 210 apartments, with Manchester law firms Fieldfisher and Beyond Corporate both involved in the transactions.Paul Danks, Group Sales Director at McGoff Group, comments: “Downtown has been an incredible success story for the Group, both in terms sales and the faster than anticipated build programme, which meant the development was completed approximately 14 months ahead of schedule.

“Following the completion of Phase II, we are very much looking forward to our continued involvement in the residential asset management of this exciting building, ensuring our residents truly enjoy their stay at Downtown.”

McGoff Construction Coronovirus Statement

In response to the current Coronavirus situation in the UK and following our recent communications, I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for your continued commitment and support during these uncertain and difficult times.

The whole Construction industry enters a state of flux as development programmes grind to a halt. Our situation is vastly different, as we are a group of diverse yet closely related businesses specialising in the creation and operation of much needed Care Facilities for the most vulnerable in our society.

It is totally understandable as to why so many Businesses and indeed individuals feel utterly powerless during this National Crisis. We however feel we can really make a positive difference in these extreme conditions, by supporting key workers in both hospitals and private care facilities. Back to the Garden Childcare is working closely with Local Authorities proffering child care places for the care workers to avail of, thereby taking the pressure off skillsets desperately needed on the front line.  Newcare is working with Local Health Authorities to support their need to mitigate bed blocking within hospitals as we make our newly built Care Home Facilities available to ease such pressures.

McGoff Construction’s activities will now be solely focused upon delivering such Care Facilities nationally, currently across 10 settings, for our related Businesses and other valued Care Sector Clients. Their challenge will be to increase the pace of the delivery of private hospitals to support the NHS in its time of need. Having invested heavily in offsite Construction, we are best placed to meet this challenge through rapid construction techniques being currently utilised via Panacea within the Group. In all likelihood we will be accelerating productivity hand in glove with front line responders to fight this war waged by an invisible enemy.

“Every effort will be made by McGoff Construction to drive our projects to programmed completion and want to reassure our valued Supply Chain of our objectives.”

We want to reassure you that McGoff Construction has already taken a number of actions as advised by our Government to minimise the health risk to our employees and supply chain. We are following all guidance and advice issued by HM Government and Public Health England and will be initiating further procedures:

–  Anti-bacterial gel and wipes delivered to all sites as often as the Supply Chain allows, our Procurement team are working tirelessly to source available stocks.

–  Temperature checking upon entry to all of our sites.

–  Allocation of a dedicated individual, trained by the Groups Lead Infection Control and BICS

–  Qualified Trainer to carry out hygiene duties, including regular cleans of welfare and office facilities.

–  ‘Break Rotas’ to stagger brew and lunch times, in line with Government guidelines on Social Distancing.

– Social Distancing Marshals on site.

Our Head office teams are operating as usual, albeit from home. All team members can be contacted in the usual manner, via email or telephone; which will support our objective of business continuity to deliver projects of national importance. Our Infrastructure, telecommunications and IT systems will provide us with minimal business interruption during this time.

To support us with minimising the risk of infection please continue to adhere to the following;

– Follow best hygiene practices as recommended by Public Health England.

– Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze put used tissues in the bin straight away.

Barchester care home reaches construction milestone

Barchester Healthcare’s Mortain Place Care Home in Eastbourne has reached a construction milestone with the holding of a ‘topping out’ ceremony.

The home, which is being built by McGoff Construction, is set to open its doors in October 2019.

Mark Bennett, Director of Property Services at Barchester, said: “This is our seventh project with McGoffs and we couldn’t be more pleased. After launching and opening our first home constructed by them last summer in Lichfield, we were recently named a finalist in the Pinders Healthcare Design Awards.“Each new build uses a bespoke Barchester Healthcare design that has incorporated learnings from all levels of the business, including customers and carers. This was to ensure each of our homes are not only safe, comfortable and welcoming, but luxurious, spacious and thoughtful. The home’s design will not only allow our team members to provide the best level of care for the residents who live there, but also ensure the residents are able to live dignified lives in surroundings that allow them to be as independent as they choose to be.”

The luxury new home will feature en-suite bedrooms with smart TVs, spa bathrooms, in house hair salon and Wi-Fi.

McGoff Construction Contracts Manager, John Redford, commented: “We were delighted to reach such a significant stage in the build process today. It was a pleasure to share the occasion with our project partners Barchester Healthcare. We look forward to handing over the Marketing Suite in the next few weeks which will allow finished aspects of the care home to be showcased.
