This £4.5m design and build project was delivered by a highly experienced, integrated team of local, like minded SME’s. We assembled a team fully aligned with the aspirations of both Warrington BC & Great Sankey High School, equipped with the necessary experience and mature attitude to deliver a high quality service.
McGoff Construction collaborated with Ellis Williams at tender stage, and the integrated design and build team produced a collaborative tender submission. Design Consultations were held at the start of the project with; staff and pupils, as well as representatives from the Council and the local community. The design was well received by the local community, and gained an overwhelming majority of votes at the community consultation day.
The first phase of the project saw the demolition of the existing 6th Form facilities that were no longer fit for purpose. A new, three storey, steel farmed building was then constructed on the grounds of the existing school.
Our partnered SME Mansell Finishes was presented with ‘the Drylining under £1m award’ at the FPDC Plaisterer’s Awards 2011. The Great Sankey 6th Form College has also been awarded the Cheshire, Warrington & Wirral Local Economic Award at the Northwest Building Control Excellence Awards 2012 as well as coming runner up for Project of the Year Award and the Integration & Collaborate Working Award.
Logistically the project was very challenging. The school remained open throughout the works so safeguarding the staff, pupils and visitors of the school was paramount at every stage.Located in a residential area and in a close proximity to a local primary school and community leisure centre, the area was already rife with parking issues and traffic congestions. Throughout the project the companies Commercial Director attended regular Community Steering Group Meetings where local residents, council representatives and affected stakeholders discussed these issues and worked together to find solutions. New cycle paths were added to the area during the project in an attempt to reduce traffic congestions. McGoff Construction publicised the new cycle paths in newsletters distributed to the local residents.
Site deliveries were limited to 9.30am – 2.00pm to avoid road congestions and safeguard the students.Access to the site could only be gained through the site office which was manned at all times. All site staff were CRB checked and photographic ID badges were utilised. Weekly meetings with the school ensured open lines of communication. Any noisy or disruptive activities were discussed with the school, with details cascaded to local residents.
The site was registered under the Considerate Contractor scheme and received “higher than satisfactory scores in each category” with praise given for the sites; security and access routes, as well as McGoff Construction engagement with the school and local residents.
Community newsletters were sent out on a monthly basis detailing progress, time periods and contact details for any concerns. The schools creative writing club were enlisted to produce a number of theses letters, which were also displayed on the schools internal TV channel.
Sustainability and Innovation are at the heart of the design. McGoff Construction implemented a sustainability strategy that encompassed the BREEAM Very Good accreditation as well as; education, employment and community considerations. A site specific environmental policy was implemented with targets for; water, electricity and fuel usage. Waste was segregated on site with separate skips. Feedback on site recycling levels was cascaded to site staff on a monthly basis, with an 82% average for the project.
