Work has started on an extension to Borough Care’s Bruce Lodge residential home for older people in Offerton, Stockport. Borough Care is the largest not-for-profit provider of care for older people in Stockport. Following a competitive tender, Altrincham based McGoff Construction Ltd has been appointed as the main contractor. The Design and Architecture team at Stockport Homes is acting as lead consultant and contract administrator.
Bruce Lodge currently provides accommodation, and support, for 47 older people living with dementia, or other cognitive impairments. The building is a purpose built dementia care home with generously wide corridors, a light, airy interior and secure enclosed gardens. The two storey extension will house 20 additional bedrooms, with en-suite facilities, along with a social dining space. Work is scheduled to finish early 2020.
The new extension at Bruce Lodge will be based on an open plan ‘household model’, which is increasingly being adopted by progressive care home providers. Within this model, residents are based in small groups of between 10-15 people, but can freely roam and visit all communal lounge and dining areas of the home. This creates a calm and more fulfilling environment for residents with dementia. The open plan arrangement of the design allows residents to freely walk from their own bedroom to the lounge and dining areas without walls and doors blocking their path. This design is amongst the most progressive of its type, responding positively to the most recognised contemporary academic thinking relating to dementia design.
Further works at Bruce Lodge will also include the remodelling of various internal spaces in the existing building, including relocating the reception area to the front of the building. This further enhances security and safety, and gives a warm welcome to residents’ family and friends.
Dr Mark Ward, CEO at Borough Care, says: “In extending Bruce Lodge, we are making a significant investment, and commitment, to help boost the number of care home places available for older people in Stockport. As people are living longer, and the number of people with dementia increases, demand for residential care for older people will continue to rise. Part of our ongoing strategy is to continue to work to meet the needs of the growing ageing population in our area.”
Matt Adley, Operations Manager at McGoff Construction, comments: “We are delighted to be working with Borough Care on the delivery of the new extension and refurbishment works at Bruce Lodge. We intend to utilise our extensive experience in the care sector to deliver an outstanding project for our new client and their residents. We aim to forge a longstanding partnership with Borough Care and the Stockport Homes Group.”
